The Incredible World of Dentistry

Technology has taken us to the moon. If you pause to consider the immensity of this accomplishment, you might start to think anything is possible. Likewise, technology has taken the world of dentistry out of the dark ages and introduced a golden era of painless and cost effective holistic oral care. It is exciting to think what the future may hold should we continue on this unprecedented path.

Laser Dentistry

Arguably one of the most impactful advances in dentistry, laser technology has changed the lives of millions. Lasers have dramatically improved the comfort levels of patients through non-invasive techniques. Lasers can quickly remove any form of bacteria present in the mouth and easily detect cavities in the teeth. More importantly, these abilities reduce the need for additional procedures which cost the patient even more money in the long run.

Computer Assisted Design & Manufacturing

Known as CAD or CAM, advanced computer programs are able to assist the dentist in the design and production of bridges, crowns, and even veneers. This technology will take a picture of the patient’s affected area and craft a custom mold to fit the patient’s exact specifications… all in the same day. The downside of technological advancement is the higher initial cost. However, the long-term savings on follow-up procedures far outweigh the higher initial costs.

Advanced Filling & Bonding Materials

Dentists today use far superior materials in filling and bonding procedures. In the past, the use of potentially health-threatening mercury fillings did not last and would eventually needed to be replaced. Today porcelain or resin is used. Porcelain is shinier, looks more natural, and will not need to be replaced as frequently. Dentists use a resin composite material to bond. Resin composite is a type of advanced plastic that can be molded to fit the patient’s specific needs and lasts for many years. This prevents the need for the patient to return for follow-up procedures a few years later.
